Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course, a mixture of lectures and seminar, will be held exclusively in the English language. Discussions, oral presentations and written papers are to be in English only.
The course deals with the history of Ireland (Irish Free State, Eire, Republic of Ireland) from 1845 to accession to the EU in 1973. The 4 - 5 introductory lectures are a summary of Irish history from the 1840s to 1973. The remaining sessions will consist of oral presentation by the students wishing to write a seminar paper.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to offer a 20-30 minute long oral presentation (preferably with images, and/or with Power Point) and to distribute a page with the main points of their talk to all present. The written paper will consist of ten pages, excluding title cover and literature, typed in one-and-one-half spacing. Footnotes are obligatory. The lecturer expects students to provide an excuse (via e-mail) for non-attendance. The final mark awarded is based on:
attendance 10%, participation in discussion 10%; oral contribution 30%; written essay 50%.
For students taking the course as a Vorlesung, there will be a written final exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students should attain a good grasp of contemporary Irish history and be prepared to deal in detail with one of the themes on offer. They will also have an opportunity to improve their spoken and written English, and to participate in discussion in a foreign language. They should make use of the lecturer's hours of consultation (Wednesdays, 3-5 PM, Zimmer 2.125, Stiege IX) in planning their oral and written contributions, to make enquiries about the literature or to address any enquiries they might have.

Examination topics

The lecturer will time the pace of the introductory sessions according to the students' level of comprehension. He will use visual and audio aids to illustrate the period or events under discussion. The introductory lectures will be followed by brief description of the themes chosen by the students for their seminar papers.
