Aims, contents and method of the course

History of Celtic Studies as an academic discipline (focus: in German speaking countries); its relationship to general socio-political trends
"The Celts" in popular science
"The Celts" in esoteric pseudo-science
How to deal with popular science and pseudo-science in media
Speeches: typical New Age and right-wing esoteric myths; typical errors popularised and perpetuated in popular science
Discussion: How much sense do contacts with popular science make? How can the results of scientific research be transmitted to the broad public?

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge of the ersatz-religious and political background of popular myths about "the Celts". It will also help them learn about - and come to terms with - the problematic zones of contact their field of study has had with ideological trends of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Examination topics

The course will feature a mixture of lecture, analysis of texts, prepared speeches by students, and discussion.
