Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Since Ribot and Jakobson, it has been frequently claimed that earlier acquired language structures are impaired to a lesser degree in aphasia than later acquired ones. Recent psycholinguistic experiments with typical adults have indicated at least for certain linguistic structures that earlier acquired ones appear to be better represented and faster processed. This seminar will deal with the whole problem area from a general psycholinguistic perspective and in regard to language acquisition and aphasia. Focus will be, on the one hand, on lexicon, phonology and morphology, on the other, on frequency and markedness hypotheses.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in discussion, oral presentations, written seminar papers.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

After an introduction by the instructor, students will prepare oral presentations and later on written seminar papers: first paper on relevant literature, then about own empirical work on language acquisition or aphasia. Here it will also be possible to work empirically on either acquisition or aphasia and to cover the other field only by reading and comparing literature.

Examination topics

Reading of selected and self-searched literature, analyses of transcripts of children or aphasis; if desired and possible, also administering small pilot test.
