Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Students will learn the fundamentals of palaeography and bibliography through a study of British and Irish manuscripts. Examples will be presented in a variety of languages and scripts. Student should have some prior knowledge of Latin; previous study of medieval Irish, Welsh, Cornish, English, or French will be useful, but is not required.
Assessment and permitted materials
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Learn about the basic techniques of manuscript production. Be able to describe and interpret the physical structure of a manuscript, and to identify and read a variety of scripts. Become familiar with standard reference works and on-line resources relating to manuscripts and palaeography. Learn how to transcribe and edit a manuscript for publication.
Examination topics
The course will consist of lectures and practical exercises using examples drawn from British and Irish manuscripts. Students will practice reading and transcribing texts written in a variety of scripts, including Insular Minuscule and Secretary Hand. Problems specific to Celtic, English, and Latin manuscripts will be discussed.
