Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Cath Maige Mucrama is one of the major tales from early medieval Ireland; even though it is attested fairly late (Book of Leinster), its language is clearly Old Irish. The course will essentially consist in translating and interpreting this text, which is challenging but interesting in terms of both linguistic form and contents.

Assessment and permitted materials

text translation and written seminar paper

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is intended for students who have already done some Old Irish and serves to familiarize them more closely with the language and its peculiarities, an aim that is best achieved by reading and translating a lengthy narrative text. While doing so, the students will also practise using the Dictionary of the Irish Language.
