Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will cover basic elements of data collection, organization, analysis, and presentation. It is designed for students who do not have any background in statistics but wish to develop the skills to collect and analyze their own data in empirical and experimental investigations.
Topics will include:
What is research?
Thinking about research validity.
Thinking about research reliability.
Designing win/win studies.
Handling different types of data.
Measures of central tendency.
Measures of dispersion.
Summarizing data & Statistical significance
Correlation
Between participant and within participant designs
t-tests
Analysis of Variance
Regression
Other techniques for data exploration and analysis using R.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of the course is to provide students with a solid grounding in data organization and presentation using programs such as exel. We will discuss research designs and their relationship to particular analyses. Students will gain facility in statistical techniques including t-tests, correlation, ANOVA, and an introduction to the concepts behind regression analyses. A key goal of the course is to provide students not only with analytic skills but also a firm understanding of the key concepts in statistical analysis.
