Aims, contents and method of the course

In this class you will learn to think about language as a formal system. We discuss the most important levels on which languages can be systematically analysed. And we learn some basic results of linguistic research, and, more importantly, what questions linguists ask and how they find the answers to them.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This lecture course introduces the fundamental properties of natural human languages ​​and thus forms a prerequisite for all further courses in linguistics. Students know fundamental questions of general linguistics and its sub-areas (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics), as well as language acquisition and the nature of human language.
