Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This class offers an overview of the questions, phenomena and methods within the fields of semantics (the literal, situation-independent meaning of linguistic expressions) and pragmatics (the `enriched' meaning that arises through the use of an expression in an utterance context). While becoming acquainted with the basic concepts, we will also consult insights from current research and discuss open questions/problems - such as: where should we draw the line between semantic phenomena, and such that can be characterized as pragamatic? What does a specific classification predict and what kind of data can help evaluating our predictions?
