Aims, contents and method of the course

Content:

The course provides an overview of ancient and modern languages of the Indo-European language family, covering all branches (Anatolian, Tocharian, Indic, Iranian, Albanian, Armenian, Greek, Italic, Celtic, Germanic, Baltic, and Slavic). It also introduces fundamental methods and terminology of historical-comparative linguistics, along with basic knowledge of the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language.

Objective:

The course prepares students for advanced and specialized courses on individual Indo-European languages and linguistic topics from a historical perspective.

Methods:

The content is delivered through lectures supplemented with opportunities for discussion. Presentations are supported by PowerPoint slides, and all relevant materials, including the slides and a bibliography of referenced or supplementary literature, are made available on the Moodle learning platform.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria


Requirements for Successful Completion:
To pass the course, a minimum of 60% of the total points must be achieved in the written final exam.

Grading Scale:

1 (Excellent): 100–90 points
2 (Good): 89–81 points
3 (Satisfactory): 80–71 points
4 (Sufficient): 70–60 points
5 (Fail): 59–0 points

Examination topics

The written final exam will cover topics discussed during the course.
