Aims, contents and method of the course

Theoretical and methodological introduction to research on language policy, polity and politics and basic knowledge on the following topics: relationship between language and politics - language policy/polity/politics (with respect to a single language) vs. languages policy/polity/politics(with respect to constellations of languages and varieties) - language planning - language control - language management - language and state: official languages, state languages, acknowledged and non-acknowledged minority languages - criteria for determining the status of individual languages and their varieties - tendencies and principles of international and European language policy - language policy in Austria (state language German, Austrian German, educational language policy, foreign language teaching in Austria, language policy in the field of autochthonous linguistic minorities in Austria, sign language and new minorities) etc.. Methods of teaching knowledge are the lectures of the course leader and the reading of relevant texts.

Due to the COVID 19 crisis, it is possible that the lecture will be changed from a presence lecture to a hybrid lecture (with combined physical and virtual presence) or a mere online lecture.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester. If the development of the Covid pandemic permits, the exam will take place in presence, otherwise online. A decision on this will be taken at the end of December 2021.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Acquisition of the basic knowledge of the contents taught in the lectures as a minimum requirement

Examination topics

The content taught during the lectures, which is made available as presentations, handouts and texts for reference on the learning platform Moodle.

A detailed bibliography will be provided in the course of the lectures.
