Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim is to provide a theoretical and methodological introduction to research on language polity/policy/politics and to provide basic knowledge on the following topics: Relationship between language and polity/policy/politics (from a politolinguistic perspective) - Language policy vs. languages policy - language planning - language control - language management - language and state: official languages, state languages, recognized and unrecognized minority languages - methods of linguistic research into language and language policy - criteria for determining the status of individual languages and their varieties - trends and principles of international and European language policy - language policy in Austria (state language German, Austrian German, educational language policy, foreign language teaching in Austria, language policy in the field of autochthonous linguistic minorities in Austria, sign language and "new" minorities) - media language policy - written language policy - language anti-discrimination policy etc.
Methods of knowledge transfer are the lecture by the course instructor and the reading of relevant texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment: written exam in presence at the end of the semester on the entire lecture material.
Six questions must be answered. In order to achieve a positive grade, at least 18 out of a total of 36 possible points must be achieved.
There are a total of four examination dates. The first examination date is scheduled for the last unit of the course at the end of January 2025, the second examination date at the end of February 2025, the third in mid-April 2025 and the fourth in mid-June 2025.
The written exam lasts 90 minutes.
Exam registration takes place via u:space a few weeks before the respective exam date.
You will receive detailed information about the exam material and task formats in the course of the lecture in the course and on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Subject of examination: subject areas, research orientations, issues, methods, central concepts and theoretical approaches of linguistic research on language and language polity/policy/politics, with special consideration of Austrian language(s) polity/policy/politics.

Examination topics

The material presented in the lecture will be examined. Documents, literature references and supplementary materials on the main topics of each lecture unit are made available via Moodle for in-depth study.
