Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this class we will discuss the phenomenon of ellipsis, i.e. the omission/deletion of constituents. Descriptively, we want to classify the various kinds of ellipsis discussed in the literature (mostly on English and German), and as much as possible extend our data base to other languages (i.e. see if and what kinds of ellipsis these allow). Theoretically, we aim to critically review the various proposals that have been made to account for the existence of ellipsis, and more importantly, the restrictions governing it. What makes this topic particularly interesting is the fact that, ostensibly, an understanding of the phenomenon requires attention to syntax and semantics, as well as prosody and (perhaps) pragmatics.
