Aims, contents and method of the course

Course objectives:
- To become familiar with R(Studio) and be able to use it at a beginner level;
- To understand basic concepts in descriptive and inferential statistics and apply them using RStudio.

Course content: Introduction to R, the tidyverse, descriptive statistics, simple linear regression, correlations and transformations, multiple regression, inferential statistics.

Teaching methods:
- Quizzes based on Bodo Winter's book "Statistics for Linguists: An Introduction Using R" (2020);
- In-class practical exercises based on Winter's book and other resources.

Classes will be held in English.

Assessment and permitted materials

For every class, students will read an excerpt from Bodo Winter's book and will perform a quiz at the beginning of the class based on it.
The final examination at the end of the course will be performed without any aids.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
- Compulsory attendance (one absence allowed);
- Completion of quizzes and a positive evaluation of them;
- Completion of in-class exercises;
- Positive assessment of final exam.

Assessment standard:
- Quizzes - 30 points
- Final exam - 70 points

60 points are required for a passing grade in this course.

1 (very good): 100-90 points
2 (good): 89-81 points
3 (satisfactory): 80-71 points
4 (sufficient): 70-60 points
5 (not enough): 59-0 points

Examination topics

For the quizzes, students must read the chapter(s) from Bodo Winter's book that were required for the previous two weeks.
For the final exam, students must study all chapters from Bodo Winter's book discussed in class up to that point.
