Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Foundation of every linguistic discourse analysis which will be dealt with in the first part of the course is the preparation of a transcript. A linguistic transcript covers the complex processes and the special features of spoken language set out in written language, herewith being accesible to analytical processing under a "linguistic microscope". The main goal of the course will be to sensitize on the principals of transcription and practice them. The practical application will be carried out with GAT and HIAT. These are the most conventional transcription techniques among the German speaking population. In addition the technical questions on the preparation of data and transcripts will be emphasized.
The second part of the course will focus on the methodical principals and the central categories and concepts of linguistic discourse analysis. Among these are:
- The basic units and structures: Turn-construction units, conversational sequences and phases
- Questions of the organisation of the conversation: Turn taking, speaker-listener roles, pair-sequences and the coherence of the turns, interruptions
- Thematic organisation: Phases and the thematic course
- Contextual questions: The roles of the participants vs. roles in the conversational situation, types of conversation
Finally the central practical question of the methodical techniques will be discussed: Analysing, coherence of research questions- poals of analyses- the steps of analyses - the selection of the sections of analyses, coherence transcription- goals of analyses etc.
