Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course will examine the syntax and semantics of embedding and relativization, with a focus on a case study of pseudo-relative constructions (Radford 1975, Cinque 1995). We will begin the course with some background reading and lectures on small clauses, gerund complements and (reduced) relatives, with an emphasis on questions about raising of the subject and tense/aspect reduction. Then we’ll move on to a detailed investigation of pseudo-relative constructions in Romance, with a focus on these same questions. Readings will be assigned to accompany the lectures.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will be expected to write a short term paper on a topic that is broadly related to similar questions at the syntax/semantics interface.
