Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Language is not only subject to linguistic reflection. Outside linguistics, many people reflect on language, how it is used and, as opposed to most parts of (descriptive) linguistics, how it is supposed to be used. The language ideological debates of recent years (concerning Anglicisms, the spelling reform, dialect use, so-called 'ethnolects', 'politically correct' language use or the language use of specific social groups). These debates are rooted in a long tradition, which has also shaped linguistics. At the same time, they are manifestations of specific attitudes to, and conceptions of, language (so-called language ideologies), and not least manifestations of social conflicts.
The seminar deals with such aspects of language and communication. Focusing on some salient metalinguistic historical and present discourses, we set out to explore the language ideologies that determine public language reflection.
In order to do that, the theoretical and conceptual basics of sociolinguistic language ideology research and folk linguistics as well as of linguistic-anthropological metapragmatics are introduced and discussed.
