Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is an advanced introduction to formal semantics. The prerequisite for attending the seminar is the successful completion of the course "Introduction to semantics and pragmatics" or an equivalent course/acquaintance with the basics of (informal) semantics and pragmatics.Formal semantics studies the meaning of natural language expressions by means of a formal metalanguage. Its goal is a formal theory which captures how the meaning of a (grammatical) sentence can be derived from its parts and what the speakers of a natural language need to know in order to be able to interpret a potentially infinite amount of novel sentences. The primary aim of this course is to learn and practice the formal tools and methods needed for the advanced study of natural language semantics.
