Aims, contents and method of the course
Discussion of the latest literature on discourse structures (Rizzi expansion and its correlates in German): word order and textual coherence and cohesion; Foregrounding and backgrounding and their realizations in languages such as German, Romance and Slavic; Centering Theory and anaphors as opposed to article forms; links between aspect and definiteness; adverbials and their different clausal scopes in German and English.
Assessment and permitted materials
Oral Referat presentation is required for a Vorlesungszeugnis.
Oral Referat presentation + written seminar paper (approximately 7000 words) are required for a Seminarzeugnis.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Awareness and practical exercise of discourse-motivated structural changes in the sructure of the sentence mainly in German, but with sufficient side glances to English and French.
