Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

How do we perceive language and what do we find particularly aesthetically pleasing about language?
The proseminar is targeted towards those interested in the topics of (socio-)phonetic language perception, planned languages (e.g. Klingon), phonaesthetics, sound symbolism, dialect attitude research and cognitive poetics. The thematic diversity is intended to provide an interdisciplinary overview for exploring language perception.
The event is organized by the students and encourages active participation in the learning process. The proseminar will be led by students: Dina Stankovic and Sebastian Draxl and accompanied by Lukas Nemestothy.
Half of the proseminar consists of guest lectures by experts from linguistics, philology and related disciplines. These are further discussed and processed in an interactive discussion setting led by students. The following topics are dealt with here:
> Sound symbolism and planned languages
> Phonoesthetics and Psycholinguistics
> Dialect research and sociophonetics, language attitudes
> Aesthetics in poetry and cognitive literature

Assessment and permitted materials

Each student is part of a lecture group (group project) once and part of a discussion group that leads the discussion after the presentations. The performance evaluation includes active participation, the presentation of a group paper, the moderation of a discussion, as well as a written paper at the end of the semester (with embedding the own research results of a pilot empirical study, in team of two or small group), in which the acquired knowledge and insights should be deepened. If necessary, other possible modules can be discussed on site at the beginning of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participation in the events is obligatory (rules of absence as for courses with continuous testing (pi, "2x absences=max"). Group work (presentation and discussion group), literature research, participation in mini research project (group), active participation, PS paper (group work with identification of the parts written/organized/elaborated by the respective author).
