Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Reading of Tocharian A and B texts of various genres with grammatical and diachronical analyses.
Assessment and permitted materials
1.) Text preparation at home, translating and analysing in class (30%; evaluated individually per session); 2.) Translation and analyses of a piece of text at home (50%; to be handed in on 31. March 2016); 3.) Reading and summarising (2 DINA4 pages) of EITHER a) Hansen, Valerie: The Silk Road. A new history, Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press 2012 OR b) Mallory, J. P.: The Tarim mummies. Ancient China and the mystery of the earliest peoples from the West, London: Thames&Hudson 2000 OR c) Christopher I. Beckwith: Empires of the Silk Road. A history of Central Eurasia from the Bronze Age to the presen, Princeton: Princeton Univ. Press 2009 (20%; to be handed in on 31. March 2016).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The class enables students to work with untranslated Tocharian texts and forms for matters of IE reconstruction.
Examination topics
Students should prepare texts at home, in class we will discuss translation and grammatical analysis.
