Aims, contents and method of the course

Aims:
The primary aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the complex relationship between gender, language and social change. By the end of the course, students will have key theoretical knowledge of the field and be able to work practically, i.e. research independently, categorise theories and plan a meaningful empirical study. Specifically, by the end of the course, students will have knowledge of
1) key gender theories, understanding of the category 'gender
2) key theories of the relationship between language and gender and their critiques
3) central positions and lines of argument in the debate on the relationship between language and gender
4) existing fields of work in linguistics
5) central methods of linguistic analysis and possible areas of application
6) critical reflection, critical thinking and argumentation
7) current social discourses.

Content:
The course will cover the following topics:
1) gender theories in social sciences and philosophy
2) Central concepts in linguistics: sex - gender - genus
3) Fields of activity in gender linguistics
4) Methods and research designs in these fields
4) Anti-discriminatory use of language
5) (Critical) discourse analysis and gender
6) Contemporary social discourses and lines of argumentation

Teaching methods:
Lectures, presentations with discussion and workshops. This course is mainly interactive.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment is based on the evaluation of three components: (1) the oral performance in the form of a lesson design/discussion leader, which will be assessed at 30%, (2) active participation, which will be assessed at 10%, and the written preparation of an exposé or a written paper, which will be assessed at 60%.

The written part will be checked for plagiarism using Turnitin.
Artificial intelligence may be used to support scientific work, thinking or expression. The work must not be carried out exclusively with an AI tool. In accordance with published guidelines, any tools used must be labelled. An oral knowledge test will be scheduled if it appears that no individual contribution has been made.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The assessment is based on the evaluation of three components: (1) the oral performance in the form of a lesson design/discussion leader, which will be assessed at 30%, (2) active participation, which will be assessed at 10%, and the written preparation of an exposé or a written paper, which will be assessed at 60%.

To successfully complete the PS, both partial performances must be assessed positively. Attendance is compulsory, two unexcused absences are permitted.

A reading list will be made available on Moodle at the beginning of the semester. The reading will include texts in German and English.
