Aims, contents and method of the course

How and why do languages change?

The course offers a basic introduction to the theoretical framework of the phenomenon of language change from a language-evolution and language-system perspective and presents the most important language change processes of all linguistic system levels including the sociolinguistic aspect:
-- sound change
-- morphological change
-- syntactic change
-- meaning change.
The exact semester program is available on the Moodle platform.

Method:
The lecture will take place weekly in presence, the lecture will be accompanied by powerpoint slides and audio recorded.

Target audience:
The lecture is aimed at students of linguistics of all disciplines as well as students of philological subjects interested in linguistics.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam after the end of term (text answers are expected, there are no multiple-choice questions), all course materials (slides of PPT lecture, literature + audio recording) will be made available on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course is designed as a basic introduction for diachronic linguistics; basic knowledge of linguistic terminology is required.

Assessment standard:
There are 42 points to be scored on three main questions in the exam, and the grading scale is:
42-38 points = Sehr gut; 37-34 points = Gut; 33-28 points = Befriedigend; 27-21 points = Genügend; 20-0 points = Nicht genügend
