Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an interactive workshop-like course with the aim of introducing and reflecting theories of foreign language learning/teaching methodology alongside of direct hands-on experience at the example of practicing individually designed units of language teaching within the framework of this course. A special focus could lie on socio-interactive, non-formal, rarely used or newer forms of language teaching. Topics suggested, but not limited to, could include use of concepts like “language café”, “singing/karaoke”, “gestures”, “learning by exposure to listening”, ”theatre/role play”, “Apps”, “artificial intelligence”, “games/gamified learning”, “tandems”, “suggestopedia”, etc. Any creative way of language teaching method can be discussed from interdisciplinary viewpoints and creatively experimented with.
The course is suited for students interested into research on language teaching methodology and foreign language learning research. The course is highly explorative, because this is an under-investigated, potentially new research field. It should render the course participants sensitive towards new methodological paradigms and try exploring new methods or the ones already acquired in the course of their previous studies/work environments.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written and oral. Regular participation, presentations in the course and submission of a written paper.
The course should be highly interactive and practical with students elaborating their own teaching unit projects (“teaching experiment 1” = presentation of a preferred methodology chosen from this field (to be chosen during first 14 days of the course after a brain storming period in the first session). Students should bring in own material and ideas for this mini teaching workshop/experiment in class. Students should teach the peers in class and additionally 2 “language learners” outside of class (teaching experiment 2) to try out their methodological ideas also outside of class context. Finally, discuss their findings and thoughts in class after each unit and produce a final dossier including the experiment protocol and results reflections about their chosen method and how it worked.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular attendance + active participation (22%); presentation in the course (50%); written work (28%)
Active participation in the classes is very important and highly valued (max. one block missing!), literature research, short presentation of methods theory and unit preparation in class, preparing and organizing (moderating) one unit of self-chosen teaching method in class (teaching experiment 1), active contribution of own ideas, final proseminar dossier including reflections of the in-class unit experience plus reflections of the experience/results with the additional external 2 experimental language learners (teaching experiment 2).
Note: the positive completion of all partial achievements is necessary for a positive overall grade
