Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture will examine the evolution of Celtic languages from Proto-Indo-European to their earliest attested forms. It will include readings in and about Continental Celtic (Gaulish, Lepontic, Celtiberian) and Insular Celtic (Old Irish, Old and Middle Welsh, Middle Cornish and Middle Breton). Although all of the early Celtic landuages will be examined, particular emphasis will be placed on Continental Celtic and the Brythonic languages, their positions within the "family tree" of Celtic languages and the Indo-European origins of their morphology and phonology.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Examine the relationships among the Celtic languages and between Celtic, Proto-Indo-European, and other Indo-European language families. Learn about the historical development of verbal and nominal morphology in the Celtic languages, and about the sound changes that distinguish various Celtic languages from one another and from Proto-Indo-European.

Examination topics

Readings and lectures will describe the historical syntax, morphology and phonology of the Celtic languages from an Indo-European perspective. Class discussions will involve interpretation of texts in Celtic languages and examples of historical reconstruction via the application of phonological rules.
