Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is organised by students. Classes will be led by Sinoël Dohlen and Justina Schindler, assisted by Anatol Rath.
---
Number is a grammatical category that is reflected in various interesting phenomena, such as concord (inflection of adnominal elements like adjectives for the number of the head noun), agreement (inflection of a main verb for an argument’s number value), or verbal number (marking of the plurality of events independently from the plurality of entities).
This course is concerned with the expression and inventories of number in the world’s languages, its restrictions, rules and distributional patterns. The topic will be explored from morphological, syntactic and semantic angles. After a few introductory sessions, further content will be decided with the students’ interest & prior knowledge in mind. Some possible topics for discussion are: omnivorous number agreement (Nez Perce); singulars vs. singulatives and inverse number systems (Kiowa-Tanoan and Nilotic languages); the typological (non-)delineation of number, numerals and classifiers; and the polysemy of verbal number morphology.
