Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The thirty-five Suladi Talas the South Indian Carnatic music, which are converted to the percussion instruments Mrdangam, Ghattom and Kanjira and which are taught by syllables (Solkattu) are based on seven Talas in the sense of musical time signatures: Dhruva, Matya, Rupaka, Triputa, Jhampa, Ata and Eka. These can be varied in each case in five sub-groups (Jatis), each of these being formed from specific combinations of Talas.
The course (lecture and exercise) provides an introduction to the theory and design of Carnatic classical rhythms, informations about the percussion instruments Mrdangam and Ghattam, an overview of Music Colleges in Kerala as well as practical exercises to learn the necessary Kriyas and mnemonic syllables of Suladi Talas .
Live demonstrations at the Mrdangam and Clips complement the insight into the carnatic rhythmic system.
