Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The most ancient layer of Sanskrit is one of the most important sources for the reconstruction of PIE. The aim of the class is to make students acquainted with Vedic word forms, with the use of secondary literature, and with basic problems and questions of Vedic philology and grammar. Lecture with handouts, reference to further literature on the Moodle platform. We will cover basic Indo-Iranian sound laws, the nominal and verbal system of Vedic and some morphosyntactic questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of term, respectively, summer term 2022. Students may use all handouts and all the handbooks and grammars covered in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to take the class, students must either be familiar with the method of PIE linguistics and its terminology or have basic knowldege of Sanskrit.

Examination topics
