Aims, contents and method of the course

The omission/deletion of words and phrases in otherwise complete sentences, as in "Ede wanted to eat a steak and Sunhild ___ a pizza", is called "ellipsis". The central analytical question is when and for which elements elision is possible, and how the content of the elided material can be recovered.

Ellipsis interacts in interesting ways with binding; for example "Clara uses her computer at night, and Sandra does, too", Sandra may be understood to use Clara's computer, or her own.

In this class we will read and discusse classic and recent papers on the topics of ellipsis and binding, regarding their syntax, semantics, pragmatics and prosody.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Familiarity with the central phenomena in ellipsis and binding. Understanding of the central theoretical questions they raise, and of the most important analyses. Learning to read and understand advanced papers in syntax and semantics.
