Aims, contents and method of the course

The course takes a practical approach to academic writing, focusing on the discipline linguistics. It offers guidance, examples and exercises with respect to the following aspects of academic writing: finding a topic und planning a paper/thesis, differences between everyday German and academic German, structuring the text, connecting sections and paragraphs, argumentation, framing sources and your own perspective.

All examples and materials were developed in an FWF-research project and are based on empirical analyses of student writing at Austrian universities.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance, course work and exercises on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

This course introduces students to advanced skills in academic writing and prepares them for writing academic texts in German.

Examination topics

This semester, the course takes place online only, with 8 synchronous sessions on BBB (via Moodle) complemented by online exercises.
