Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Breathing spaces are environments in which people use minority languages without being exposed to pressure from dominant languages and cultures. In this seminar, we will examine various facets of breathing spaces and conduct our own empirical research on the topic. What examples of breathing spaces can be found in the literature? How is empirical research conducted on this topic? What questions remain unanswered? Which empirical research methods are suitable?
We will consider these questions on the basis of an examination of important research concepts, including minorization, safe space, language ecology, revitalization, and reclamation. We will also look at methods of applied linguistic research in general and in the context of minority languages. One focus is on interviews, questionnaires, and observations. In this context, we engage in a critical examination of research with and about linguistic minorities and develop and consolidate a respectful research attitude.
Participants will be supported in developing their own research projects. There is the option of linking up with the RISE UP project (riseupproject.eu) and incorporating existing data and contacts into the research work. Participants can also pursue their own research questions independently of this.
