Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course deals with the nominal and verbal morphologies of the Germanic languages and their prehistory. After a brief introduction we will first deal with the nominal system of Germanic and then with the verbal system.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written examination

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal of the course is to promote the understanding of how Germanic developed from PIE.

Examination topics

The method will be the classical method of Historical Linguistics. To begin with, the evidence of the individual Germanic languages will be examined with a view to reconstructing the Proto-Germanic morphology. In a second step, the reconstructed Proto-Germanic morphology will compared with the evidence of the other Indo-European languages.
