Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The focus od the class is the PIE lexicon; after a short introduction into semantic change and semantic reconstuction from a theoretical point of view, we will look at a variety of semantic fields (PIE kinship terms and terms of social structure, material culture, terms of time concept), quantifies, deictic terms as well as the Caland System and selected verbs with respect to the question of morphology/semantic interface.
This is a lecture with handouts, reference to further literature will be give in the handouts.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aim of the class is to acquire a deeper understanding of the basic problems of the PIE lexicon. There are no prerequisites for attending except a BA in linguistics or a respective philology.

Examination topics

The exam will cover the topics of the handouts.
