Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we will focus on a reflection on public and collective commemorationg, as is it discursively formed in media articles (text- &media analysis), spatial conditions (lingustic & semiotic landscapes), and diverse linguistic practices (acts of commemoration, protest, artistic performances, etc.). On the basis of various research questions, we will guide the students to develop their own small research projects: Which communicative forms are taken for commemoration, how are they negotiated, contested, replaced? Who are the actors to commemorate and how is commemorated (or not anymore)?
We will embed these questions in the current year, labelled as 'Gedenkjahr 2018', as it constitutes the anniversary of several historic events. Links to historical and current events in politics, society etc. are therefore part and parcel of our theoretical and empirical discussions.
