Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is designed to introduce students to the notion of corpus linguistics (CL) as a scientific method. In addition, certain topics from Construction Grammar (CxG) will also be covered in the course.

At the end of the course, students should be able
- to explain the advantages of using corpus data in the study of language;
- to formulate and develop scientific hypothesis and/or quantify research questions so that they can be investigated by means of CL;
- to explain that CL is a mode of statistical scientific explanation;
- to investigate the semantics and grammar of lexical items by means of CL tools;
- to investigate lexical features of genres and registers;
- to explain what Construction Grammar is;
- to identify and describe grammatical constructions in terms of CL notions;
- to apply CL methodology to the research areas in applied linguistics (e.g. critical discourse analysis, literary stylistics, language learning).
