Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Like no other institution of the Celts the druids remain fascinating till today. Our knowledge of these former mighty priests, however, is entirely based on the extant ancient evidence of Greek and Latin authors. The picture of the druids in these testimonies is by no means consistent, often negative and biased, sometimes idealized, but never unproblematic. In the lecture these literary texts, which range from the 2nd century BC to Byzantine times, will be presented, thoroughly discussed and evaluated. By this means not only the factual knowledge about the druids should be imparted but also the appropriate methodology in dealing with ancient sources.
Assessment and permitted materials
Assessment will be according to a final exam.
