Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The most ancient layer of Sanskrit is one of the most important sources for the reconstruction of PIE. After a short introduction into the primary texts, main problems of Vedic philology, the historical context, and the most important handbooks and secondary literature, this class concentrates on nominal morphology; next term a respective introduction into verbal morphology will follow. The main focus of the presentation lies with those nominal classes that have an important impact on both traditional and recent questions of PIE nominal morphology. On the other hand, irregularities still found in the nominal inflection of Classical Sanskrit find an explanation.
In order to attend the class basic knowledge of Sanskrit is, of course, an advantage, but it is not obligatory. The class is also designed for students of linguistics with rudimental or no knowledge of Sanskrit who want to gain some basic knowledge of Sanskrit grammar.
