Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will treat classical and basic problems of PIE morphology in the form of 6 classical and influential monographs of the 19th and 20th century. We will discuss one of them during per meeting. Students are required to read all six, introduce of them in class and write a seminar paper of about 20 pages (excluding bibliography) about one topic of their choice related to the class work. We will read and discuss the following books (they will be provided on moodle):

Karl Hoffmann: Der Injunktiv im Veda : eine synchronische Funktionsuntersuchung 1967
Alan J. Nussbaum: Head and Horn in Indo-European 1985
Calvert Watkins: How to kill a dragon: aspects of Indo-European poetics 1995
Jay Jasanoff: Hittite and the Indo-European Verb 2003

Assessment and permitted materials

Reading list is mandatory as well as active participation in the discussion (20%), presentation (30%) and seminar paper (50%).

Examination topics

There is no exam, students are required to attend, deliver a pesentation in class and write a seminar paper of about 20 pages (excluding bibliography) until 2023-03-31.
