Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Caland System is a specific group of Indo-European derivational morphology that mainly comprises property concept roots. In recent years, the focus of research has shifted from descriptive studies to the status of caland adjectives within nominal derivation and their relationship to verbal formations. The relationship of Caland forms to other types of adjectives and possessive formations is of great relevance for the understanding of the genesis of PIE nominal derivation, more precisely: of uncompounded possessive adjectives and of compounds. The proseminar first offers an introduction to recent research on this topic and proposes a series of research questions that can be dealt with in the context of a proseminar paper; depending on interest, individual linguistic empirical studies or theoretical work can be chosen. The exact list of tasks can be found on the course Moodle page.

The units on 04.03., 11.03. and 18.03. serve as an introduction to the topic and preparation for the presentation. Although they have the character of a lecture (= lecture by the course instructor, supported by digital handouts), attendance is compulsory. There are no on-site units in April; the time is used for independent work on the selected research topics and preparation of the presentations, supported by supervision from the course instructor. In the units from 6.5. to 17.6. the papers are to be presented, followed by discussion in the group; on 24.6. there will be a final discussion on the semester topic.

Assessment and permitted materials

Adoption of one of the proposed topics and independent work on it; presentation of the results in a presentation (in German or English) in a teaching unit from May to June; a proseminar paper of at least 10 pages (excluding bibliography) must be written by the end of the semester. This paper can be written in German or English.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The proseminar deals with a complex topic of Indo-European noun morphology and is therefore only suitable for students with correspondingly advanced knowledge (e.g. successful completion of the lecture "Indo-European Noun" or "Historical Grammar of Old Indic. Nominal morphology").

The grade is based to a small extent on active participation in the discussion in the units (10%), to a larger extent on the presentation on the chosen research question (30%) and to a large extent (60%) on the resulting proseminar paper.

Attendance is compulsory, necessary absences must be justified (e.g. illness).

Examination topics

This is a competence- and research-oriented course with immanent examination.
