Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Old High German is one of the important early Germanic languages; it is attested in a number of manuscripts from about 800 to 1050 AD. The literature of Old High German is of great variety and comprises prose as well as poetry. The course starts with an introduction to phonology and dialectology of Old High German (sound shift, dialectology etc.); the second part of the course will consist in reading and translating texts. The introduction offered in the course will be comprehensive, and no specific knowledge is expected; however, a familiarity with other early Germanic languages (Old Norse, Old English, Gothic) or with Middle High German will be helpful.
