Aims, contents and method of the course

This is an advanced seminar in theoretical comparative syntax. Its unifying theme is the nature of redundant and deficient operations (as defined below) in grammar and their modelling.
Redundancy (R): the output of an operation is insensitive to some feature specified in the input.
Deficiency (D): an operation that presupposes a certain feature applies to a grammatical entity that lacks it.
Empirically, we will focus on two domains, namely resumption, and (grammatical) Voice, both of which amply illustrate both R & D.--

Please note that in order to be able to participate successfully, you need to have already successfully completed a theory of grammar course comparable to the one offered in our BA curriculum 'Sprachwissenschaft'.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to do the readings before coming to class, come to class, participate actively by asking and answering questions, make a presentation with a handout, and write either an overview paper giving arguments for preferring a given analysis to alternatives from the literature, or a squib analyzing something having to do with the topic of the seminar.
