Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Syntax and semantics of referring, quantifying and bound expressions (names, noun phrases, pronouns) are discussed in tandem and formalized. Starting with generative binding theory we discuss cross-linguistic data. Various theoretical approaches are presented and compared. Crucially, we will keep in mind that all and any syntactic devices and representations need to lend themselves to a formal semantic interpretation, and show where and how this can be achieved.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam at the end of the semester.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Language specific as well as cross-linguistic investigation. Comparison of different theoretical approaches to binding theory. Introduction to the semantics of referring and quantificational nominal expressions. Exemplary demonstration of how syntactic and semantic analysis should be developed side by side.
Examination topics
Oral presentation, occasional handouts or presentations by computer.
