Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The prosody of an utterance (phrasing, stress, pauses, intonation) is closely related to its syntactic structure (and, of course, is meaning). We will discuss various recent approaches to the mapping from syntax to prosody (or the other way around). As a part of that, we'll discuss more general questions about the nature of syntactic and prosodic representations, as well as the general architecture of grammatical theories (can prosody influence syntax etc?).
Assessment and permitted materials
Regular and active participation, a presentation with a detailed handout.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
To introduce students to state of the art research; to draw attention to non-syntactic aspects of grammatical theory.
Examination topics
Reading assignments, lecture, discussion, presentations.
