Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Based on several thematic strands, it is the goal of "Italo Calvino and World Literature" to give a general impression of the author's production. In keeping with the title of the course, this is done by drawing attention to the parallels and correlations of Calvino's work with that of several other writers, thus presenting a survey of trends and methods of narrative literature of the 1940s to the 1980s.
Assessment and permitted materials
ATTENTION: Apart from obligatory course attendance, a presentation and a term paper (about 15 pages) there will be a short exam on the three novels (see below) in October. It is therefore recommended you read the novels as early as possible.Selections of shorter texts and passages by Calvino and others will be handed out regularly for obligatory reading.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
It is the purpose of the course to introduce Calvino's work in some detail. This is done via an analysis of several distinct phases of his production, which in turn are contrasted with and compared to general literary trends in Italy, France etc. (Neorealismo, Oulipo, ...)
Examination topics
In addition to reading and analyzing several of Calvino's novels (see below), group work and presentations will take care of background information such as introductions to literary 'schools', important intertexts, poetological/critical writings etc.
