Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Modal particles like German ja, wohl, doch, aber etc. contribute elusive, non-truth conditional aspects to sentence meanings. Based on nascent work on the subject in formal pragmatics (conventional implicatures), this class aims to review the (sparse) formal literature on the topic and develop an approach towards analyzing these particles in German and other languages.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation, presentations, final paper; critical review of one or several of the approaches discussed.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Overview of recent contributions to the topic. To develop skills in understading and critically reviewing research contributions.
Examination topics
Readings will be assigned on a weekly basis; participants will prepare and present readings.
Reading list
