Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Modern Irish texts will be analysed. The structure of the language will be made clearer and vocabulary built up. Where relevant, grammar is discussed. This course is intended for students with previous knowledge of Irish. The student should already know the basics of the Irish language (at least 1 Semester of Irish or other similar previous experiences of Irish). Students of all disciplines who have some previous knowledge, even if it is not recent, are welcome.

Exam criteria: The ability to understand and analyse a text in written and oral form and also to explain relevant contexts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Continuous assessment through set tasks and a short written examination are required.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The student should be able to work independently on a text using a dictionary by the end of the semester. He /she should be able to recognise and analyse various structures of the Irish language in texts, to build up vocabulary and to understand an entire text without knowing every single word. Overall structures of texts, the context and the capability of linking various parts in order to understand the whole is of great importance here.

Examination topics

Every week a text will be analysed , whereby the students will mainly work on it with the guiding hand of the lecturer and a dictionary.
