Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The literature on definiteness and indefiniteness concerns itself regularly with "specific" nominal phrases, their meaning, and their syntactic behavior. This course investigates characteristics of the interpretation of noun phrases that have fallen under the rubrick "specificity", the question of whether these characteristics in fact have any grammatical correlates, and if so, whether these belong properly to syntax or semantics. One result of this investigation is that the roll of modification in specific noun phrases has gone underappreciated in the literature on the matter, an observation that sheds light on the proper solution to certain problems in this area.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students must present one or two in-class presentations (according to the number of students) about a topic drawn from the class readings.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Acquisition of fundamental knowledge about nominal reference and its relationship to syntax. Acquisition of specific knowledge about the significance of, and background to, the most important scientific problems in the area of "specificity" and proposed solutions to these problems.
