Aims, contents and method of the course

Continuous reading, translation and interpretation of the poetic text (Schahname, Book 12: "Siyavusch in Turan").

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Special attention will be dedicated to Early Modern Persian language, from semantic, syntactic as well as phonological perspectives. Further topics will include prosody, formation and specific types of poetical similies and metaphors as well as other figures of speech and literary techniques of Early Modern Persian. And last, but not least, one of the central subjects will be the cultural and intellectual context of the work - on the one hand, with regard to ancient (Old and Middle Iranian) traditions ("narrated time"), and, on the other hand, concerning the adaptation of Old and Middle Iranian narrative material in the Early Islamic period by Firdausi ("time of narration").

Examination topics

A combination of classical philological methods (traditionally applied in Iranian Studies) and modern approaches of linguistics, literary science and textual critiscism: Lecture (Persian), translation and text interpretation incl. discussion.
