Aims, contents and method of the course

The legend of King Arthur wich originated from Celtic Britain is of extraordinary interest for the European literature of the Middle Ages. The legends of King Arthur do not only occupy an important place among the Middle Welsh literature. The matters of this legends have also been taken up, passed on and treated further in the other European literatures. After a short survey of the Middle Welsh literature a systematic representation of the synchronous grammar of Middle Welsh will be given. These basic knowledges shall then be deepened by commonly reading and interpreting selected parts of a text belonging to the legendes of King Arthur (the tal Mal y kavas Kulhwch Olwen). This lecture is especially for students of Celtic Philology and Indo-European studies, but also for all others, who are interested in Middle Welsh.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Acquisition of basic knowledge of the Middle Welsh language and literature. Development of the ability to read and translate Middle Welsh literature.

Examination topics

Systematic representation of the Middle Welsh language and literature. Common reading and interpretation of Middle Welsh text belonging to the legends of King Arthur.
