Aims, contents and method of the course

In the early Middle Ages the area of modern Scotland was home to population groups of different linguistic and cultural background. This course will explore the multi-faceted relationships between Picts, Dál Riata, Britons, Angles and Vikings. We will examine the historical developments, as well as the factors involved in the emergence and transformation of political and ethnic identities.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To begin we will offer an introduction to relevant historic, archaeological and linguistic sources. To ensure a critical use of these sources, theoretic frameworks and methodological approaches will be presented via an analysis of current scholarly debates.
