Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course is meant to give a panorama of the representation of the beyond in Western literature. The first major part is dedicated to the ancient tradition up to Dante (Homer, Virgil, ...); the second deals with several later works and authors working in or outside of the "epic" tradition (e.g. Milton, Blake, Beckett, Joyce, Rulfo, Nabokov).
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance; presentation; term paper (12-15 pages)
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The goal of the course is to get students acquainted with an aspect of the literary tradition in the Western world (Katabasis, Depiction of the Beyond, use of motifs and themes across the centuries).
